In the last blog post, we talked about the possibility of painting interior walls in the winter, but the exterior walls can’t be painted in cold weather, right? False! Exterior walls CAN be painted in the winter! Winter time does mean a few extra difficulties and details to consider, but it is not impossible. In fact, in winter time, humidity is usually decreased and this helps paint cure and dry beautifully.
When considering exterior painting in the winter, you need to make sure some conditions are met. The biggest thing is of course, the temperature. Although paint doesn’t need a 90 degree summer day, it does need to be at least above 35 degrees, with above 50 being more ideal. The daytime high is not the only temperature you need to worry about. The over night low must also be above at least 35.
Lower curing temperature paint would be the best choice for winter painting as it contains no additives and allows a more flawless finish at the minimum 35 degree limit. Picking a paint that is specifically formulated for cold weather painting is the best idea. Low temp, water resistant paint is formulated to wick away moisture, and cure in good time in cold weather. Check the specifications for your choice of paint to make sure low temps are acceptable for your product. If temps are too low, paint will not cure properly and dew may form on the surface. When the dew evaporates, it could create stains and prevent paint from adhering correctly.
Besides temperature, other factors can include wind speed, direct sunlight and drying time of your product. Not to mention the correct equipment (brushes, rollers, etc.).
