People often wonder if it is alright to paint interior walls in the winter time. For the most part, the answer is yes! Under the right circumstances and with an experienced painter on the project, winter time can be a great time to get your interior job done. During the summer months we can get busy with vacations, travel, pool parties and backyard barbecues with family and friends. Not to mention painting crews are often busy in the summer months with exterior projects. In winter, we usually have our family and friends over for parties and holiday festivities indoors. This makes early winter the perfect time to get ready to host those events at home.
There are a few details to keep in mind to make sure your paint job maintains it’s beauty for years to come. When painting in colder temperatures, you will need to be aware that in a cold snap, outside temps may chill the exterior walls of the structure causing the interior walls to also drop in temperature. In order for the paint to adhere and dry properly, you need to be aware of wall temperature, as well as air temperature. Ideally paint should only be applied in temperatures above 60 degrees and never below 50 degrees. Usually your home or office isn’t below this temperature in the winter, but make sure the heat is warming up the walls. Keep your walls warmed up for around 12 hours before paint is applied and for around 36 hours after, while paint is drying and setting up for the long haul. There is no need to crank the heat up excessively, paint doesn’t need the room to be 90 degrees and you don’t want your roast your painters.
