Sometimes when you buy a new business space or rental home, you may be stuck with the dark style of the previous owner. A dark blue, green, red or black surface on a wall or ceiling can be difficult to change. If not handled properly, that dark color can still show through multiple coats of paint. It can also change the color of the lighter hue you are trying to get. So how can you tackle this problem? Here are the steps you will want to take.
First you will want to patch all the holes or gouges with a quality paint primer, preferably white. Once the blemishes are covered, you will need to sand the surface smooth (after the compound has dried thoroughly).
Second step will ensure that the dark color does not mute the lighter one you will be applying later. This step is to use a white primer. Primer is always an important step in any painting project, it will ensure paint will adhere properly and cover well. When covering dark colors, white primer will help minimize the need for extra coats of paint. Let the primer dry completely and scuff lightly with a sanding sponge.
Third step is all about the technique. Using a roller (avoid roller lines, do not over apply paint to the roller), you will want to apply white paint in wide “W’ or “M” shapes. This will ensure total coverage and lessen the chance of “holidays”. ‘Holidays’ are areas that show the base through the coat of paint, because the paint coverage is sparce. Let dry, scuff and re-apply a second coat of white to any place that the primer is still visible.
Now you are ready for the last step. Applying your fresh, new color! This coat can be applied using a normal technique. Let it dry and enjoy!
